Careerbreaker is part of Madventurer, a market leader in the gap year travel industry. Madventurer recognised the increasing number of non-traditional ‘gappers’, people in their late twenties, mid-career, post children and in retirement, who wanted the opportunity to travel, give something back and experience the world’s exciting possibilities for themselves.
Our ethos
We bring together development projects and adventurous travel to offer individuals a unique experience. Careerbreaker’s ethos is 'developing together'. We aim to assist in community development, whilst at the same time enabling individuals to gain new exciting and challenging experiences through work and adventurous travel. Specialising in group and solo projects, our management, UK staff and overseas crew focus all their resources and passion into making your career break work for you and your host community.
Our history
Madventurer, and subsequently Careerbreaker, were founded by John Lawler, who continues to manage them today. John's first experience of Africa was as a teacher in Ghana during a gap year in 1998. In recognition of his contribution to the village in which he taught, John was enstooled as Ngoryi-Fia (Chief of Development) and renamed Torgbui Mottey I, which translates as Chief Pioneering Pathfinder through the Forest. Madventurer, which was established in 2000, has since been awarded the Shell Livewire UK Award for Sustainable Development and the Prince’s Trust Best Business Award. We also support The Mad Foundation, a registered charity (No.1111805) which helps people in some of the world’s poorest countries to help themselves by providing funding and support at a grassroots level, to help develop much needed community resources. Careerbreaker and Madventurer help to support the work of the Mad Foundation by making regular donations and by fundraising on its behalf.

We have has no upper or lower age limit but Careerbreaker caters for people with real work, family and life experience. As part of Madventurer, who has been successful operating and expanding since 2000, and as an ABTOT bonded travel company, we are ideally positioned both in the UK and overseas, to satisfy the increasing number of people wanting to take an exciting and meaningful career break. Whether it is to fulfil a long held dream, take time out for reflection and change, enhance your CV, ‘give something back’ or challenge yourself in a totally new environment.
Careerbreaker recognises that taking a career break is sometimes more difficult to do than the traditional younger ‘gap year’ experience. Appreciating how vital it is to ensure you get the most from your career break, we will work with you to identify the best possible Careerbreaker options for you and present you with your own proposed itinerary. Gap Club, our ABTA bonded in house travel agency, allows us to help you identify optional adventure and sight-seeing trips to perfectly complement your volunteer placement/s. We can present thousands of options to you, from climbing the highest peaks on the planet to relaxing on some of the most romantic and exotic islands, as well as sourcing flights and insurance.
