Careerbreaker Destinations - New For 2007 - India
India is a country of colour, a deep embedded history of different religions, culture and people. The seventh largest country in the world with a massive population, it’s geographic and climatic diversity from the awe inspiring Himalayas, to the tranquil backwater ways of Kerala, the mystical Ganges to the far reaching desert is only matched by a culture and society which seem to the visitor so full of contradictions and diversity.
Occupying the majority of the Indian subcontinent, India has a coastline of over 7000 kilometres. It is the birthplace and home of some of the most ancient civilizations and religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism and has for centuries, been an important trade route. Throughout its sometimes difficult history it has retained and preserved many ancient customs and traditions. Whilst English is spoken widely, (India gained its independence following British colonialism in 1947), there are over 18 major languages and more than 1000 dialects and minor languages.
India has a multi-lingual and multi-cultural society who highly value family and education, although literacy currently stands at only 65%. There are many wonderful sights, religious festivals, landscapes, wildlife, temples and monuments to experience; and the colourful cuisine, which its emphasis on spices and sweetness, varies from region to region.
Despite India’s great strides forward in economic development, the majority of India’s people (70%) remain impoverished. Careerbreaker projects in 2007 will be rurally based and focus on the construction of school buildings and sanitation facilities. We are also looking at assisting with initiatives to develop and promote environmentally sustainable farming methods.
