Careerbreaker can help you to arrange a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course, or an intense Spanish or Portuguese language course, prior to your volunteer programme, to ensure you get the most out of your career break.
TEFL
For those of who would like to do a volunteer teaching Work Placement or get involved in teaching on a Community Development Project you may find a TEFL qualification very helpful, especially in countries where English is not the only widely spoken language; most new to teaching overseas find that their confidence and creative teaching skills are enhanced by this course.
Careerbreaker can arrange 20 hour weekend courses in the UK, which are available all year around at various locations throughout the country. This course will give you your TEFL qualification which is approved by the Department for Education and Skills.
This will not only enable you to teach to your full potential but also provide you with a vital tool if you’re considering travelling elsewhere in the world and allow you to support yourself through paid employment.

Spanish
Learning a new language is often an additional incentive for visiting new destinations. Careerbreaker therefore facilitates one-week Spanish language courses, for Peru and Guatemala volunteers, catering for the beginner to the intermediate linguist for Careerbreakers travelling to Peru.
The ability to speak the local language is not a prerequisite to join a Careerbreaker Community Development Project In Peru and Guatemala, as crew will be able to teach you the basics and will work with you on site, although many people relish the opportunity to get to grips with a new language as it helps them get more out of their career break. However we do recommend that for any Peruvian or Guatemalan Sports or Work Placements you are able to at least ’get by’ in Spanish and we will be able to advise you of what placements are most appropriate to your ability.
This one week course usually takes place one week before the start of your project/ placement. A ‘special’ is available during the summer months for those on Community Development Projects, consisting of night classes during the first week of the project.
