Work Placements - Medicine and Healthcare - Tonga
This small nation nestled in the Western Pacific Ocean is formed by 173 beautiful islands, stretching over 800 miles north to south. A country famous for its warm welcome, Tonga’s unspoilt beaches and amazing landscapes make it one of the Pacific’s best kept secrets.
Careerbreaker Volunteer Work Placements is based on the country’s main island of Tongatapu (Or ‘Sacred South’) in the capital of Nuku’alofa. A small interesting town, you will find most things you need here, banks, supermarkets, historical buildings and a few good spots for a bite to eat and drink!
You will be spending most of your time in Vaiola Hospital in central Nuku’alofa. The hospital serves the majority of Tongans and healthcare in Tonga is free. This does not mean that it is of a particular high standard.
Tonga receives lots of funding and voluntary help from Australia, New Zealand and Japan for its health care system and as a very small island nation, Tongans are grateful for the support they receive from overseas.
We will arrange for you to meet, having already discussed your placement with the hospital,with some of the senior staff at the hospital together with our Careerbreaker Crew. You will have an opportunity to discuss your aims and expectations and how your individual skills can best be utilised by the hospital to give you the most rewarding experience.
Weekends in Tonga are free to enjoy at your leisure. Although you are welcome to stay in the Careerbreaker house, we suggest that you explore the unspoilt beaches and gorgeous landscapes that the various islands have to offer. More active volunteers can hike up active volcanoes, or make the most of the fantastic diving opportunities.
