Work Placements - Orphanage and Carework - Peru
Peru is one of the few countries in the world to incorporate all the major geographical extremes, from the towering snow capped Andes, to the vast tropical jungles of the Amazon, to a long and varied coastline, it contains scenery for every enthusiast. Combine this with a rich Inca and Hispanic heritage and you have a country that pulses with culture and vitality.
Careerbreaker Volunteer Work Placements are based in amazing city of Cusco, a UNESCO World Heritage site and ancient centre of the Inca Empire. This city is a great base for exploring famous Inca ruins, including Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail.
Sadly this beautiful city is also home to over 6,000 street children. These children, who often resort to begging, theft and prostitution to survive, find themselves on the streets for different reasons. Often their families can simply not afford to feed and shelter them; some children may have experienced abuse in their family; others have been abandoned due to physical or mental disability.
To compound the problems facing these children, they have little or no access to food, healthcare and education, and there is a shortage of social programmes in place to support them. The children’s homes, both government run and those run by Non Government Organisations, are the children’s only means of support and can offer escape from a life on the streets.
You can choose from a variety of placements and centres. Careerbreaker works with several homes – some are residential centres, others operate an open door basis, where children can drop in to take advantage of the warmth, food and overnight accommodation. Most homes specialise their care, some are run for children who have had to leave their rural family home to pursue an education in the city, while others are for youngsters who have been forced into child labour and may have drug problems.
For those volunteers wanting to teach, we can arrange Volunteer Teaching Work Placements. Other volunteers can get involved with the practicalities of running a home and caring for the children. If you have or would like experience dealing with special needs children, please let us know.
There is plenty to do at the weekends and you don’t have to go far from Cusco to find yourself in villages where little has changed in the last hundred years. People in traditional Peruvian dress still farm the fields with ox-drawn ploughs, and donkeys are the main rural transport.
Please Note: You will need to speak Spanish to enjoy our placements in Peru. For those with little or no knowledge of the language, we can arrange a week’s intensive tuition prior to your placement in Cusco click here for further details.
