Community Development Projects - Sri Lanka
Considered by Marco Polo to be the finest island of its size in the world, Sri Lanka, the Teardrop of India, the Pearl of the Orient, has long been an irresistible destination for travellers. This strikingly beautiful landscape has its own unique charm, balancing jungle with hillside tea plantations and long sandy beaches dotted with palm trees.

In contrast the island's capital, Colombo, is a thriving and modern city with plenty entertainment and good nightlife. Sri Lanka is an island where colour abounds everywhere, in the bright festival decorations, in the scenery, and even in the food. Yet it is undoubtedly the famous warmth and hospitality of the Sri Lankan people which will leave the most indelible mark on the visitor.

Careerbreakers helped to address the need to support communities after the 2004 boxing day Tsunami, working alongside Sarvodaya, Sri Lanka’s largest NGO to assist local communities with re-building following the devastation.

In the North and South East areas of Sri Lanka, Sarvodaya had been undertaking valuable work, prior to the tsunami, and these are the areas in which future projects will be based. Here there are families that have been living with community and social problems for many years with a lack of clean water supplies and adequate school buildings.

At the weekends you can explore this fascinating country, visiting the islands stunning white sand beaches lined with coconut palms, the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and some of the best diving reefs in the world.
