Volunteer Sports Projects - Football - Ghana
Volta is the easternmost of Ghana’s ten administrative Regions, bordered by Togo to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Lake Volta (Africa’s largest man-made lake) to the west. Our Careerbreaker Sports Placement Programme is based in the Volta Regional Capital, Ho, a fantastic base from which to explore this lush and mountainous region, home to the country’s tallest waterfall and highest peak.
Working with the Ho Education Authority and their Sports Development Department, we have implemented a number of schemes; which aim to provide a more structured and comprehensive programme of sports coaching within schools in the region. We are currently working with three schools, where we have introduced a timetable for PE and are currently providing football coaching to the children during these sessions. Whilst football is the predominant sport, there are opportunities to introduce a wider range of sports to these sessions too.
We have been given responsibility for the coaching of the school football teams, including training sessions and the organisation of regular matches. It is hoped that we will be able to introduce a league system to school football teams in the region, encouraging interaction and involvement between local communities. We are currently involved with the coaching of the Under 15 Regional Team and this is a partnership which the Director of Education is keen to promote long term, enabling us to develop their regional team and provide a year round continual training programme.
To provide a sustainable and expanding sports programme in the region, it is our intention to provide not only coaching to children, but also to share coaching skills and techniques with teachers and sports coaches, allowing them to continue and develop the programme.
Ho is a relatively large town, being the capital of the Volta Region, and has a large market, tro-tro and bus station, a good internet café, two hotels with swimming pools that are open to daily visitors, and a number of chop bars (local ‘restaurants’), spot bars (to buy a cold soft drinks or beers), small shops and stalls that sell all the necessary essentials.
