Volunteer Sports Projects - Football - Peru
Our base in Peru, Cusco, was once the centre of the great Inca Empire and is home to some 300,000 people. The city attracts a great deal of tourism, as the base for getting to the Inca Trail and the ruined Inca city of Machu Picchu. The narrow cobbled streets and local craft markets still retain all of their traditional charm.
You don’t have to go far from Cusco to find yourself in villages where little has changed in the last hundred years. People in traditional Peruvian dress still farm the fields with ox-drawn ploughs and donkeys as the main rural transport. Despite the income parts of the region receive from tourism, many of these small villages remain very poor. Careerbreaker Volunteers in these areas can help provide the children with new experiences and help contribute towards sports and youth development within the local communities.
Volunteer Sports Placements in Cusco will focus on coaching football and volleyball. This can be done in local schools or in children’s homes in Cusco city. The homes are for abandoned children, most of whom are in the homes because they have been abandoned for reasons of extreme poverty or alcoholism or abuse within the family.
Careerbreaker gives the chance for the children we work with to do something active and enjoyable, with someone who has a real passion for football. Playing sports will help develop and build self-esteem in these children, who often think very little of themselves. Football is almost a universal language and one that can be used to deliver so many positive messages.
Coaching football will require a certain level of Spanish, plenty of enthusiasm and patience. We can arrange a one week Spanish course to improve your knowledge, prior to your placement, click here for further details.
Just remember these four questions, when in Peru and you’ll never go wrong:
“What is your name?”
“How old are you?”
“Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend?”
And of course!
“What football team do you support?”
You will be living in a rented house alongside Work Placement Volunteers, located in the centre of Cusco. It is the perfect base from which to explore this vibrant and exciting city, and ideally located for our placement locations which are just a short walk or taxi ride away.
You will also share the house with a Careerbreaker crew leader who will oversee your placement, and provide you with all the support and guidance you need. The house has dormitory style accommodation with a shared kitchen and living space – a great place to unwind and catch up with your fellow volunteers after a hard days work.
