Volunteer Sports Projects - Football - Uganda
Our Ugandan projects are based in the Jinja region, where the source of the Nile begins at Lake Victoria. Jinja is a spacious, relaxed town which has all the amenities a volunteer may need. The local transport is matatu’s (small mini buses) and boda-boda’s (bicycles or small motorcycles). Jinja is about an hour and a half away from Kampala, Uganda’s vibrant, bustling capital city.

The weather can be hot and humid during the day all year round. The rainy seasons are from March until May/June; and Sept/Oct - November

We have worked closely with the Jinja District Authority, in particular the Sports, Education and Special Needs Departments, to develop a number of links with various institutions based in and around Jinja; to construct options for Sports Placement Volunteers to choose from when they arrive.

The Sports Volunteer Placements, can be divided into four principal areas:

  • Regular morning work in local schools
  • Regular afternoon work in local football academies
  • Less regular or ‘one-off’ work with orphanages, children’s’ centres and special needs units in schools
  • Organisational work, for example tournaments for particular age-groups

The regular morning and afternoon work will be divided into weekly blocks, allowing each Sport Placement Volunteer to rotate through different institutions. We have two priority primary schools for morning coaching, where volunteers will take children each lesson, on a class by class basis.

We have two priority academies for the afternoons. These academies are attended by children and youngsters from various schools in the local area, with an age range of 8 to 22 years. We also have links to various institutions that cater for orphans, street children and children with special needs.

This placement will principally entail sports coaching, but there is opportunity to be involved in other educational areas such as HIV, malaria and nutritional awareness. To further promote sport in the region you can also organise tournaments or even set up a local league.

Our placements are centred on football, but there is the opportunity to coach netball in schools and at a local academy. Volleyball, rugby, athletics, cricket and even karate can be launched with enough enthusiasm and perseverance should a volunteer have a passion for any one of these sports.

To encourage sustainability in the region Careerbreaker also looks to share coaching skills with teachers and sports coaches to ensure that children have access to quality coaching throughout the year.
