Volunteer Sports Projects - Rugby - Fiji
Our Careerbreaker Volunteer Sports Placements programme is based in Suva, the laid-back capital of Fiji and the largest city in the South Pacific. Suva is situated on a hilly peninsula in the South East of Viti Levu, the biggest of Fiji’s 300 or so islands. A multi-racial, almost cosmopolitan city, Suva has plenty of shops, internet cafes, gyms, sporting facilities, restaurants, a few bars and a cinema.

Suva is warm all year-round, with the hottest months being from December to March. These also tend to be the rainier months, but tropical showers can happen any time, keeping the palm trees looking lush and green!

Following consultation with FASANOC (Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee) and the national sporting bodies, we have been able to implement a number of schemes which aim to provide a more structured and comprehensive program of sports coaching within schools in the region. We have worked with over ten schools in Suva, both primary and secondary as well as some adult clubs, and a couple of rural villages further afield. We have provided rugby, hockey, netball and soccer coaching both during PE lessons and after school training for the teams. There may be opportunities to coach other sports, depending on the season and your interests.

There will be two rugby coaching sessions a day most days, with the possibility to train with a local team some evenings during the week, and even play for them on a Saturday if you are good enough. Please bear in mind though that coaching may be unavoidably cancelled due to rain or random school events such as dance practice, school trips or because they have just decided not to train that day! The Fijians have a wonderful way of taking each day as it comes, and this can extend to not mentioning school will be closed for our next coaching session!

Women’s Rugby
After one of our female Sports Volunteers got involved with a local club, which we are now coaching at regularly, we have been approached by a representative from the Suva women’s rugby organisation who has requested our help with all of their teams.

The league consists of five clubs, which rarely receive coaching from experienced players or coaches; this means that we have potential to make a large difference in the women’s game.

Female Sports Placement Volunteers will certainly find a team to train and play with while here, the set up has a relaxed and fun atmosphere. We are also looking to offer a coaching qualification along with this coaching placements’ this will be a course run by Franck Biovert, who is an ex-French international and ex-coach of the USA, now working at the University of the South Pacific.

Whilst on your placement you will be living in the Careerbreaker house in the suburbs of Suva. You will be sharing a room with up to six others, with communal areas for relaxing after coaching and training. The house will have electricity, TV, hot showers and a well equipped kitchen. You will need an Australasian adaptor for any electrical items you intend to plug in.

Meals will be a team effort using a mix of local and western food. There may also be a local cook to give you a taste of local dishes. There will also be the opportunity to stay in a rural village for one weekend, to experience traditional Fijian life away from the developed city of Suva as well as ample opportunity at weekends to go sight-seeing, travel to beautiful beaches and explore the islands.

NB The rugby season in Fiji runs between January and September.
